Lab Schedule for next two weeks
by Steven Gordon - Friday, 29 November 2013, 3:31 PM

The original schedule for lab 3 is sections 1 and 2 next week:

Section 1: Monday 2 December 9am

Section 2: Monday 2 December 1pm

whereas section 3 will be the following week:

Section 3: Friday 13 December 9am

Then lab 4 will be held in the week starting 16 December 2013.

The reason for splitting lab 3 across two weeks is that there are public holidays on Thursday 5 Dec and Tuesday 10 Dec.

If a large group of students from a section would prefer a different schedule (e.g. section 3 have a lab on 6 Dec, or section 1/2 have a lab on 9 Dec), then please let me know asap. Unless I hear otherwise, the original schedule will be used.

Lab 2 quiz and attendance scores are now on Moodle. Please check your answers, and let me know if you wish me to re-check your quiz.

I hope most of you received my email notice earlier today, but just in case, SIIT and TU are closed tomorrow Monday 2 Dec. All classes cancelled. That means the next ITS332 labs will be:

Section 1: 9am Monday 9 Dec

Section 2: 1pm Monday 9 Dec

Section 3: 9am Friday 13 Dec

Moodle/ICT is available again. At this stage SIIT is open again on Tuesday 3 Dec for normal classes. I'll send an update if there are any changes.

As SIIT is closed Monday 9 December (tomorrow), the ITS332 labs for all sections will be cancelled this week. The next lab is Monday 16 Dec (Sections 1 and 2) and Friday 20 Dec (Section 3).

Lab Marks So Far
by Steven Gordon - Sunday, 26 January 2014, 2:24 PM

For Lab 6 tomorrow (and Friday) there are new seating arrangements. Check your new seat when you arrive at the lab.

In Moodle, if you view your grades you can see a summary of the marks so far for quizzes and attendance. Note that late attendance by about 10 minutes or more results in reduced score. Very late attendance results in 0 for that lab. If you do not attend more than 4 labs, then you automatically receive an F. There are currently 3 or 4 students that have missed 3 labs out of 5 - they need to attend all labs from now on.

The final exam will be in the lab (rather than the originally planned written exam). It will be held during normal lab times - Monday for Sections 1 and 2, Friday for Section 3 - during the last week of semester (3 and 7 March). It will be similar to the quizzes, e.g. on Moodle, use the terminal, Linux Reference Card. I'll give more info closer to the exam.

Lab Schedule and Makeup
by Steven Gordon - Sunday, 2 February 2014, 1:09 PM

In the ITS332 lab this week we will learn how to configure the Apache web server. In subsequent labs we will return to building an internet and setting up routing tables.

For Section 3 (CS, Friday mornings) there is a public holiday on Friday 14 Feb. Therefore we need to hold a make-up lab. I propose we hold a makeup lab on Saturday 8 February from 9am-12noon in the normal lab. If you cannot attend on 8 Feb, then you have an option of joining one of the other two sections on Monday 10 Feb. If you have a problem with this schedule (i.e. cannot attend on 8 Feb or 10 Feb), then please let me know before 5pm Tuesday 4 Feb.

There are no changes for Section 1 or 2 (Monday).

Finally, for the remaining 4 labs, if you are very late then I will treat it as though you did not attend, meaning 0 for attendance, 0 for quiz and it will count towards one of the 3 labs you can miss before obtaining an F. Also, I will not allow you to attend another section unless you notify me before your normal section.

Final Exam Practice
by Steven Gordon - Friday, 14 February 2014, 9:53 AM

The lab next week (17 and 21 Feb) will require you to build an internet and setup web server, firewall etc.

Then in the following week (24 and 28 Feb) the final exam will be held during the lab. I will send further details about the exam format soon, but it will be similar to the quiz questions done in the labs (including allowed to use termianl and linux reference card).

To practice for the exam, I have created a practice quiz with 34 random questions from all the past quizzes. You may attempt it as many times as you like - it is not assessed.

ICT Moodle Server Down Until Monday
by Steven Gordon - Saturday, 15 February 2014, 4:37 PM

SIIT Bangkadi will be without power tomorrow (Sunday 16 Feb), and therefore Computer Centre will be shutting down the Bangkadi Internet connection at about 5pm Saturday. Therefore ICT server (including Moodle) will be unavailable until it is restored - most likely Monday morning.

Final Exam Scores
by Steven Gordon - Friday, 28 February 2014, 2:12 PM

You can now see your final exam scores, as well as total course scores, on Moodle. These are tentative scores - they may change (for instance, if I find a mistake in my marking).

For your final exam I recommend that you view your score for each question, and discuss with me if you have queries about your score. Although I manually graded some of the questions, if you believe your answer is correct but it is marked wrong, let me know. The same applies for quizzes and attendance. Please check your scores before 5pm Friday 7 March, after which I will finalize your grades.

Most of you now have a good understanding of basic computer networking concepts. Some of you will get the chance to apply this knowledge during summer training. If you are interested in learning more about the Internet, Linux, computer security and open-source technologies, then let me know. From May to August, my grad students and I are available to hold some workshops on such topics and work with dedicated students on projects of mutual interest.

Well done and good luck in your other courses.

Steve

PS Next year we plan to upgrade the lab with new computers, desks, chairs and cabling. I welcome any suggestions on how to make the room and equipment better suited to learning.
