Welcome to Networking Lab
by Steven Gordon - Wednesday, 13 January 2016, 6:22 PM

This semester you will gain hands on practice with computer networking and Linux in ITS352 Networking Laboratory. Your first homework task is to read the course website, especially overview, schedule and assessment criteria. I will assume you have read this before the first lab. The website is via:

http://ict.siit.tu.ac.th/moodle/

If you have login problems, then inform me during the first lab (which is next week, 18 Jan for Section 1, ..., 23 Jan for Section 5).

One of the most important things about that lab is that attendance and participation is mandatory. If you miss 4 or more labs you automatically receive an F. Late attendance or lack of participation (as determined by the instructor) will result in a penalty and may mean the attendance is not counted for that week.

You must attend your registered section. You are not allowed to makeup in another section unless you have permission from me before your registered section starts or have a medical certificate.

Quizzes will be held during labs. Late attendance, lack of participation or inappropriate behaviour may disqualify you from attempting the quiz.

If you attend and try in the lab then I think you will find it fun and not too hard.

See you next week.

Network Lab Quizzes
by Steven Gordon - Sunday, 24 January 2016, 5:17 PM

You can now see your scores and correct answers for Quiz 1 on Moodle. I recommend you compare your incorrect answers to the correct one. If you still think your answer works, then try it again in the next lab and show the instructor. There are sometimes many different ways to do the same thing, so maybe your answer is also acceptable.

I've also marked the attendance in Moodle. If you are late you either received 0.5 or 0 marks. Please arrive before the start of the lab.

In this week we will continue with Linux command line. There will be a quiz which will cover the new concepts as well as some questions on the commands covered in Lab 1. So make sure you review Quiz 1.

Lab on This Saturday 13 Feb
by Steven Gordon - Thursday, 11 February 2016, 6:12 PM

This message is only for students in section 5, on Saturday mornings.

SIIT has announced that classes on Sat 13 Feb can be cancelled (due to TU-CU football). However some classes are continuing. ITS352 Network Lab WILL be on this Saturday 13 Feb at 9am.

If you want to attend the football match then let me know via email your name BEFORE the lab and I will not penalise you for missing Saturday's lab. I will then organise a make-up lab for you during next week, from 4pm to 7pm Tuesday to Friday (the day will be announced by Monday).

In summary:

1. Either come to the lab as normal on Sat 13

2. Or email me that you will not attend, and then attend the makeup from 4-7pm later next week.

Prepare for Exam
by Steven Gordon - Monday, 18 April 2016, 8:28 AM

An update on the Network lab:

1. This week we have normal labs (Section 1 today, through to Section 5 on Saturday)

2. Course Evaluations will be held at the start of each lab this week. Please attend on time and evaluate us.

3. Next week during each lab we will hold an exam (see notes below).

4. Practice questions for the exam, which are mainly repeats of the quiz questions, are available at:

http://ict.siit.tu.ac.th/moodle/mod/quiz/view.php?id=1189

(Unfortunately ICT server has been inaccessible for last few days due to some hardware failure so I could not make these available until this morning).

5. The exam will be held during your normal lab time (e.g. Monday 1pm for Section 1) EXCEPT for Section 5. For Section 5 (which is normally on Saturday morning) I propose we hold the exam on Wednesday 27 April at 10:40am. I think the timetable is free for all students in Section 5, but please let me know if not. I will confirm with Section 5 students during the lab on Saturday 23 April.

6. Some more details about the exam are at:

http://ict.siit.tu.ac.th/moodle/mod/page/view.php?id=1118

7. You MUST attend your allocated section for the evaluations this week and for the exam next week. Missing your exam section will be treated the same as missing a normal written exam.

Re: Prepare for Exam
by Steven Gordon - Saturday, 23 April 2016, 3:11 PM

A reminder that the exam for Network Lab is next week, held during the normal lab time (except for Section 5 - they are shifted from Saturday to Wednesday 10:40am).

Try the practice questions for the exam. The real exam will have between 18 and 22 questions, mostly similar/same as quiz questions.

You can see the answers for Quiz 8 now.

Check your scores
by Steven Gordon - Monday, 2 May 2016, 1:29 PM

The Network Lab exam answers and scores, as well as total scores are now available on Moodle. Please do the following:

1. Review your exam, comparing your answer with the 'correct' answer and identify what you did wrong.

2. Review your quizzes, checking there are no mistakes in the marks.

3. Check the participation/attendance scores. Normally you received 1 for attending, 0.5 for late and 0 for very late or not attend.

4. Check the score calculations - the exam (40%), quizzes (40%) and participation (20%) combine to the correct total score for the course.

I have manually checked some of the exam questions, but always a chance that either I have a wrong answer or your answer is correct but not accepted. Note for the exam question about 'drawing' the message sequence diagram (sequence of DNS, TCP, HTTP packets) I manually marked, normally giving a score of either: 0, 1, 2 or 3.

If you have any questions or concerns about any of the above then you must let me know by:

5pm Thursday 5th May

After that I will assume all quiz scores, exam scores and attendance records are correct - no changes will be made.

Well done on completing the Network Lab. I hope it has provided you some useful insights into Linux and network administration.

Steve

PS I will not reply to queries about letter grades.
