Quiz Answers
by Steven Gordon - Thursday, 28 November 2013, 8:43 AM

For Quiz 1 (online quiz), I have manually checked some of your answers, and changed your final score (e.g. if you including padding like xxx in your plaintext; Moodle initially marked it wrong, but I changed it to correct).

For Quiz 2 (in-class) you can see your scores, quizzes and answers on Moodle.

SIIT Closed on 3-4 December
by Steven Gordon - Monday, 2 December 2013, 4:18 PM

Thammasat Uni, including SIIT, will be closed for an additional two more days: Tuesday 2 December and Wednesday 3 December. Also Thursday 5 December is a public holiday, so currently SIIT classes will start on Friday 6 December.

For CSS322, the next lecture will be on Thursday 12 December (since Tuesday 10 December is also a public holiday). However there are some tasks that you should do before the next lecture:

1. Quiz 3 (online). This quiz covers concepts of block ciphers and general security. The deadline is 1pm Thursday 12 December. It is assessed - you must get 50% or more.

2. View lectures from last year on Block Cipher Operation. This is our next topic, but because of the missed lectures your homework is to view last years lecture on Youtube. Specifically:

CSS322, Lecture 08, 30 Nov 2012 (http://youtu.be/6ZS7wlQkfRM?t=44m) from 44:00 minutes until the end

CSS322, Lecture 09, 07 Dec 2012 (http://youtu.be/3aVJdzfNWc4) from start until time 37:00 minutes.

3. I will create a homework task based on the lectures on Block Cipher Operation. It will be available in the next day or two and due 17 December 2013.

4. You may still try Exercise 1 (break some classical ciphers). Note the exercises are not assessed.

If you have any questions, you can contact me via email (steve@siit.tu.ac.th or steve.siit@gmail.com).

Stay safe and see you next week.

There will be an in-class quiz at the start of tomorrows lecture. Topics will include meet-in-the-middle attack on double-ciphers, modes of operation, and PRNG. You don't need to remember the modes of operation pictures - they will be given if necessary.

Homework on OpenSSL
by Steven Gordon - Friday, 20 December 2013, 9:52 AM

On the course website you can see the homework task that you need to complete by Friday 27 Dec. This will be assessed.

Although it may take some time and effort to get OpenSSL running, once you can decrypt a file with it, you will find this homework very easy.

Try to get OpenSSL runninng by Tuesday next week, so you can ask me any questions during the lecture.

Lecture This Week
by Steven Gordon - Tuesday, 14 January 2014, 1:21 PM

According to the SIIT announcement (http://www.siit.tu.ac.th/announcedetail_en.php?id=605), lectures will start tomorrow Wed 15. However I am aware some lectures/labs for other courses may be canceled this week and some students may not be able to attend Bangkadi.

For CSS322 on Thursday 16 Jan, I will have a lecture at normal time. However I will not start on a new topic; instead I will provide some feedback on the Midterm Exam (you will be able to check your exam) and discuss aspects of the homework and using OpenSSL (which you will use in subsequent homeworks). So if you miss the lecture Thursday then you may catch up by viewing the video on YouTube and/or asking your friends/me next week.

Steve

PS Next ITS332 Network Lab for CS students is Monday 20 Jan for Section 1 and Friday 24 Jan for Section 3. There is no lab on Fri 17 Jan.

New topic: Firewalls
by Steven Gordon - Monday, 3 February 2014, 8:29 AM

A small deviation from the original course schedule: this week we will cover firewalls. This may mean we do not cover one of the last topics (passwords, transport layer security) depending on time.

The lecture slides for firewalls are on Moodle. I'll place hardcopies in the Copy Centre this morning. Note that the lecture notes are the same across both of my security courses: CSS322 and ITS335.

Homework with Public Keys and Certificates
by Steven Gordon - Saturday, 22 February 2014, 5:47 PM

The homework task on using OpenSSL to generate public keys and certificates is available at:

http://ict.siit.tu.ac.th/moodle/mod/assign/view.php?id=534

Read through the tasks and try to use OpenSSL to complete the steps. You "upload" files to the ICT server which then automatically processes your files and creates a response for the next step. Although I've tried to create it so the response will be automatic (within 5 minutes of you uploading), there may be some manual intervention by me involved (especially if you upload the wrong file).

If you upload the wrong files or make mistakes there will be no penalty if you retry. The exception will be if you upload a secret (such as your private key, or an unencrypted secret value), then you may be penalised.

At least read the instructions before Tuesday, so when I explain some steps in the lecture it will make sense to you.
